E-cigarette use and regulation in South Africa: A synthesis of evidence in response to industry efforts to undermine product regulation

This article analyses and responds to reports commissioned by the e-cigarette industry about planned restrictions in South Africa. It is a narrative assessment of the scientific literature on e-cigarettes that has been published in South Africa.

The results from the study reveals that the number of e-cigarette users may be substantially higher than that in the reports commissioned by the industry, according to the findings of a nationally representative survey. Contrary to industry claims, e-cigarettes are more expensive than traditional cigarettes, and the Control of Tobacco Products and Electronic Delivery Systems Bill, a proposed regulation that would regulate e-cigarettes like tobacco products rather than medicine, would be beneficial for the general public's health. In addition, the government's planned taxes on e-cigarettes would raise much-needed funds for the government while lowering adoption of e-cigarette by youth.
