Webinar: Protecting Tobacco Control in Times of Crisis – Moving Beyond Tobacco Industry Charity to Alternative Government Solutions

The Africa Centre for Tobacco Industry Monitoring and Policy Research (ATIM), together with the African Tobacco Control Alliance (ATCA), the World Health Organization Regional Office for Africa (WHO AFRO), and the Global Center for Good Governance in Tobacco Control (GGTC), will jointly organise a virtual regional consultation titled “Protecting Tobacco Control in Times of Crisis: Moving Beyond Tobacco Industry Charity to Alternative Government Solutions” on 20 October 2026.

The consultation will bring together regional and global tobacco control experts, policymakers, government representatives, researchers and civil society organisations to examine how the tobacco industry uses corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives, particularly during periods of economic hardship and crisis, to influence public health policies and decision-making.

Discussions will focus on strengthening the implementation of the World Health Organization Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC), particularly Articles 5.3, 13, 18 and 19, alongside relevant decisions adopted at the eleventh session of the Conference of the Parties (COP11).
