Le directeur de l'ATIM met en avant le lien entre le tabagisme et la tuberculose dans un nouvel article à la une

Professor Olalekan Ayo-Yusuf, Director of the Africa Centre for Tobacco Industry Monitoring and Policy Research (ATIM) and Head of the School of Health Systems and Public Health (SHSPH) at the University of Pretoria, has been featured in a recent Spotlight article examining the relationship between tobacco and nicotine use and South Africa’s tuberculosis (TB) epidemic.

In the article, Prof. Ayo-Yusuf argues that South Africa’s efforts to end TB will remain constrained unless tobacco and nicotine addiction are addressed as part of broader public health interventions. Tobacco use is a known risk factor for TB infection, disease progression and poorer treatment outcomes, making tobacco control an important component of TB prevention and control.

The article highlights the need for stronger implementation of evidence-based tobacco control measures, including the regulation of emerging nicotine and tobacco products, protection of public health policies from industry interference, and greater access to cessation support services.

As Africa continues to face a growing burden of tobacco and nicotine product use, integrating tobacco control into broader health and development agendas remains critical to improving population health outcomes.
