WHO global report on trends in prevalence of tobacco use

The World Health organisation has launched the third edition of the WHO global report on trends in prevalence of tobacco use 2000-2025. The report shows among other things that world over the number of people using tobacco is declining, despite population growth. There has been a steady decline in any tobacco use for both males and females in each age group over the observed period 2000-2015.

The report also projects that the number of male tobacco users will decline from 2019 onwards. However concerted efforts still need to be made to ensure that this becomes a reality. According to the report current tobacco use rates in Africa among people 15 years and older is about 13%, for men being 21% and female 4%.
